Why, if Islam is 'God's true religion' would He wait thousands of years to let people in on His little secret?

I mean, humans were running around for a long damn time before Mohammed had his 'visions' or whatever. Why wait ? Was 'God' just messing around with us, seeing if any of us would 'discover' His entire plan out of the blue, without any help?
