How did American colonists defend the capital of Washington, DC during the Revolutionary War?

Had the British captured Washington, DC, many of those monuments would have most likely have been destroyed, such as the White House, the Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial.
